Making a footstool

Psalm 110 is the one of the most quoted Psalms. It gives us insight into the inner courts of heaven and a conversation that happened there between the Godhead. The Father tells the Son to stay seated until all His enemies are built into a footstool that he could rest on. Here’s the secret: this is a powerful promise of the church one day living in the victory of the cross.

What is Christ waiting for? He is waiting for his people to realize the full potential of the cross and to live that out in the church. That means there are a lot of renegade spirits running around, there are a lot of untamed issues that Christ already conquered and God is waiting for us to build a footstool for him as the church saying, “We have overcome this.”

For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. (Romans 8:20-25)

We have an appointment with God in the carpenter shop. He is building something out of our lives. He wants us to be ready and to be willing to fight from a place of victory. We are to fight from victory not for victory. We are to work out our “salvation with fear and trembling.” (Philippians 2:12) There’s a bunch of stuff that Jesus died to give us that we haven’t received yet. There is a lot of things that Christ legally purchased that we have not legally experienced.

God told Jesus to sit at His right hand until He has made His enemies His footstool. There are no enemies that haven’t been conquered, but there are enemies that haven’t been arrested. Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:18-20) We don’t have to ask God for victories already won by Christ. But by faith, prayer, activity, obedience and perseverance, whatever you arrest he has already arrested in heaven. The devil is acting illegally in many place and occasions because he has been untested, ignored or allowed to do things.

We are often like the two hundred pound man that is being ruled in a restaurant by his twenty pound child. My wife and I have four children. When they were little, every time we went out, people would stop and say how well behaved our children were. But I can’t count how many times I have been to a restaurant and seen a two hundred pound man being controlled by a twenty pound child that is out of control. Many times I’ve wanted to go over and say, “Your sweet little angel is ruining the dining experience for everyone around them.” The devil is like that spoiled child who’s been undisciplined by a fearful church. The church thinks it can’t stop things, but the one that made the world lives in us.

When Jesus took his seat next to the Father, he sat down in victory. He sat as the conqueror. He had defeated all his enemies and rested with the curses broken. He sat down with the penalty paid in full. When he cried, “It is finished!” He had finished it. He paid the full cost of the sins of the world. He redeemed us all. There was and is nothing left for him to do. There is no victory for him to win. He’s already crushed the devil.
