But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. (2 Timothy 3:13)

In the book of 1 John, we have five short, compelling chapters, written by the person that might have been the closest to Christ Jesus.

As we read 1 John, he combines three descriptions of God into the theme of love. He describes God as light (1:5; 2:8), life (1:1-2; 5:11) and love (4:7-8; 4:16) Throughout this fantastic book, the word love is used 43 times. It is by far the dominant theme of the book of 1 John. It is also the fundamental truth that undergirds the weapon of spiritual discernment that we will look at in this chapter.

Without a firm grounding in the love of God, we can not use the weapon properly. Let’s lay some groundwork and then dive into spiritual discernment.
