And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites, that the Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel, who said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘I brought you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of bondage; and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you and gave you their land. Also I said to you, “I am the Lord your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not obeyed My voice’” (Judges 6:7-10).
God doesn’t send bad things into our lives, but He uses chaos to make us more Christlike and this often begins with us crying out to Him. God loves it when we cry out to Him. God answers first, by reminding us of what He has done for us in the past. In Israel’s history, as depicted in Judges 6, before He sent the next judge to help the nation of Israel find freedom from Midian, He reminded them of the deliverance He had wrought from Egypt, the ultimate enslaver. Then, He exposed the sin which was leading them into that cursed bondage: idolatry.
God works to set us free from curses, and the first step in our learning how to be curse breakers, starts with us remembering all that God has done in our past. Recall the difficult times in your life. Where did you see God breakthrough for you? It’s important—no, vital—to bring to mind the past deliverances because they are the fuel our faith needs to see the next curse broken. Then, we have to address the disobedience and sin in our lives which are making the attacks of the enemy possible.
